Anchorage is not the country life by Alaskan standards, but depending where you are coming from it might be. We have moose etc. wandering around all the time, that is about as wild as it gets in Anchorage. What types of jobs do you have, or hobbies? If you have normal jobs, then Anchorage is the best place to find work. If you truly want a country lifestyle the outskirts of Anchorage or a smaller community might be more what you want.

Climate is a huge consideration even for lifelong Alaskans like myself. Anchorage is one of the more moderate parts of the state. Further north, the winters are longer and colder, but the summers are more hot and dry. Southeastern AK is rainy most of the year, winter and summer, so no freezing cold winters, but not as much sun in the summer.

Feel free to ask more detailed questions if you want, I grew up in the bush, very rural. I have lived in Valdez and Anchorage. I am graduate student in Anchorage now.

Anchorage is a young and creative city.

To give you an idea: Movies - $8.50, a loaf of good bread like Oro Wheat is about $2.50, gas is around $3.38 a gallon; rent and housing associated costs are quite high and have gone up dramatically in the past couple of years, like everywhere else.

A 1300 square foot house in downtown Douglas for $163,000 in 2000 which was recently assessed at $256,600. Rent for a two bedroom apt. can be around 900 bucks and up. Electricity/oil heating another 100 bucks a month (or more) but that has gone up quite a bit lately too...but salaries tend to be higher here as well. Make sure that you determine the cost of living adjustment for Alaska by using a cost of living calculator like the one at http://www.homefair.com/homefair/calc/salcalc.html You can put in the calculator that you make 50 grand where you live now, and it might tell you that you'll need to make 70 grand in Alaska(for example) but figure that out so you can negotiate a fair salary.
