It starts with a smile. Ask them questions about themselves (how are you? how's life? what do you do for a living?) And LISTEN to their response. Ask more questions about what they tell you to show you're interested. Don't try to make a conversation about you unless they ask and watch to see if they are interested in the answers. Ask them more questions (if they ask you what you do for a living and you tell them ask them if they've ever done anything similar instead of going on about you.)

Best place to socialize is where people who do what you like hang out. I had an unexpected great conversation at the library the other day just from someone asking a simple question as they walked by and my son responded kindly.
