It all depends on the size of the files. There is no definitive answer. You can fit more lower quality songs in the same space as less higher quality songs. For example, a song that is 64kbps will be about half the size of a song that is 128kbps, and therefore, can fit 2 songs the same length in the same amount of space that you would have only had the 1 song at 128kbps.

It depends on the compression level of the mp3 song. On average size of the song will be about 3-4 mb (@ 128kpbs) so you should be able to put about 70 songs on the 256 mb card, about 140 on 512 mb card, and about 280 on 1gb card. You can fit more songs if you lower the bit rate of each song, but it will affect the sound quality.

I'm assuming you're frugal like myself and bought an inexpensive MP3 player/USB drive combo.

There are several limits to be aware of due to the filing system. Most MP3 players work as USB drives too and use the FAT32 file system. The file itself has overhead associated with in the form of allocating a FAT and cluster size. The larger the drive the larger the cluster size. Any file with data in it will use at least one (most will use more) cluster. So if the drive has a 64K cluster size then a file of a single byte would use 64K of space. With music files this results in some unused space at the end of nearly every file -- a file that is evenly divisable by the cluster size would waste no space, but those are rare.

It also has another limitation that can be very annoying with the larger SD cards -- it can only have 224 entries in it's root directory, and those are old style 8.3 file names, using long file names will eat up several of those entries. So if you have a 4M MP3 file entitled "A Great Song by My Favorite Artist.mp3" It will use up 3, 4, or maybe even 5 of that 224 limit. You can workaround this by renaming the file once you copy it to the player. I tend to rename then to 001.mp3, 002.mp3, etc.

From experience I find I get about 35 songs on a 256MB card and can count on 180 on a 1G card and have managed to get over 200 on it. Numbers vary depending on sampling rate of the mp3 files. I never bothered with 512M cards, I can get 1G cards through Pricewatch for under $15 with free shipping, so see no point in buying smaller. (1G is the largest my player will accept)

With the 1G card, I can walk to work, listen to music all day including lunch and walk home without playing through the entire card. I find my battery lasts about 8 hours, so I need to bring an extra with me.

My teenage son says the 256 mb can hold about 40 or less and the 512mb can hold about 120 mp3 and 240wma. 1 gig can hold about 1200 songs acording to the songs.

depends on a few things.....
1) what type of music file
2) size of the song

if you use windows media player you will be able to fit about 30 hours give or take on a gig somewhere round 15 on a 512 and 7 on a 256
