I think this is one of those topics, where alot of opinions are thrown, yet the wrong person hears them, and the wrong solutions occur.
I do not agree with black history month having the shortest month out of the year. In fact i find it alittle insulting. Its hard knowing that, there are so many small minded ppl out there, and the funni thing is, alot of them come out during this time of the year. Stereotypes are on, attitudes are up, etc. They give us book reports or heroes, just so we can taste the sastisfaction of knowing our roots. Then as soon as we hand that paper in, we go back to the textbooks, that don't even linger the thought of African-American heroes and heroines and inventors.
Hispanics only get one day, so i feel their pain, although they have a reason to complain
It commemorates the victory of Mexican forces led by General Ignacio Zaragoza over the French occupational forces in the Battle of Puebla on May 5, 1862.
But as African-Americans, i cant help but be reminded of all the pain, sometimes i think whats the point of celebrating, when we are still dealing with the same BS and small minded ppl as we are thousands of years ago.

excuse me, but does every black person have to whine about how everything has to be so unfair for them? February has 28 days, sometimes 29. Okay, so it is plausible that February has an extra day every 4 years, and this is only 1 day short of the average 30 day months. Besides, if black people would notice, there isn't any white pride month, even the latinos only have 2 days, (ever heard of Cinco De Mayo? What about Dios De Las Muertos?) Eventhough it may technically be 1 short month, its more than any one ethnic group recieves. What do you want, an entire year? Then it would be execusable because its only one year, huh?

Honestly, I don't even agree with the black history month thing. And no, I'm not racist. I just think that it's true what our forefathers wrote in that all men are created equal. Why is it fair or neccessary that one race gets a month to be celebrated and others don't. Then complain about getting a month even though it's short, I think it's completely ridiculous. All men and women no matter what race are equal, and I don't think any one race deserves a month to celebrate all the things THEY did to make our country better. My fiance is Puerto Rican and he doesn't complain about not having a month. Whites (myself) don't complain about not having a month, it's just crazy. I understand all the importance of appreciating and learning about black history, but I don't think it should be more important than any other race in America. That's what is so great about our country, the difference in people. And frankly I think it's racist to only have a black history month and not a spanish history month or white history month, or any other culture. This is all my opinion of course, but celebrate black history and other history all year round and don't complain about getting a whole month when other cultures have none.

To the best of my knowledge, African Americans are the only ethnic group to even have a month dedicated to their celebration, which is pretty special. Instead of complaining about how short it is, people should embrace the time that is given, and realize that it is not the only time you can celebrate black contributions. The month only highlights blacks, but you can still celebrate this culture any other day of the year.

February was chosen by a black man, Dr. Carter Woodson, who, "...launched ***** History Week in 1926, chosen in the second week of February between the birthdays of Frederick Douglass and Abraham Lincoln, which evolved into Black History Month in 1976".
Who should be blamed now?

I don't give a lot of acknowledgment to Black History Month, because I celebrate my heritage all day every day. I feel that by labeling one stinking month, gives a reason for people to exploit and make profit from my heritage.

no, personally i find it an insult as an African-American woman, its like we are their token to other countries. Make it seem like we are better but america only sugar coats how they really are. But then i always just sit back and take it, only cuz, for one Hispanics on get one day Cinco De Mayo. I would say i am lucky but im not, cuz i think this is the worst, the fact that the hide that they are predjudice towards, back then at least EVERYONE knew it and they were open about it.

I think being upset over 2 extra days and harboring bitterness about it OVERSHADOWS the celebration that is supposed to be recognized. If you make a big deal about how you are being "cheated, and taken advantage of" because of something SO SMALL AND DUMB, you are helping to rob the meaning by bringing negativity to the center stage.

why do you need a special "month" to celebrate your heritage?
can't it be remembered through the year like everybody else?
what month do the white people get?
when do WE get to remember OUR heritage and all the caucasian american people who changed our lives?
you know...
abraham lincoln, who freed the slaves...
george washington, first president, founding father...
benfamin franklin, inventor, spy, revolutionary political....
without whom, there would be no "african americans" or "black history month"....
just slaves
when do they get their month?
washington and lincoln SHARE a day, ONE STINKIN DAY!!!
(oh, i apologize that their ONE DAY impedes your MONTH!!!)
benjamin franklin is reduced to a few days in history class
all so eli whitney can bask in the glow?!?!?!?!
(i have too much respect for dr. king to drag him into this)
it's prejudicial, and i doubt this is what the founding fathers or abraham lincoln had in mind.
it's greedy, whiney, and sickening.
i'm not prejudiced, i'm an equalist.
we, the whites, ARE NOT SUPERIOR to anybody!
WE'RE NOT LESS THAN ANYBODY EITHER!!
I WILL NOT APOLOGIZE FOR THAT!!!
