Ash Wednesday (2/21/07) starts the 40 days of Lent in the Roman Catholic Litergical Calendar. During this 40 day period, it is normal for Catholics to make some sort of 'sacrifice'...either give something up or do something extra.
Good Friday, is the Friday before Easter Sunday which commemorates the day of Jesus' death on the cross. This year, it will be April 6th, with Easter on the 8th. No meat is to be eaten on Good Friday, and most Catholics will fast that day (i.e., only eat one normal meal)

It is man-made and in no way shape or form gets you any closer to God.
