We're putting on Fiddler on the Roof at my school and I can't figure out how to pronounce this name...the part I'm trying out for is Chava and "Fyedka" is her opposite.

I've always heard it Fee yed kuh. That's how we pronounced it when I was in Fiddler. In fact, I played Chava! Break a leg! Chava's a meatier character than the other girls. She's smart, and defiant, and a rebel. Plus she has an emotional scene where her father shuns her. Any more questions e-mail me at lilyelizabethsnape@yahoo.com.

I was Chava my school did Fiddler two years ago. I always pronounced the name like "Vee-et-ka". But with a school production as long as you have a close pronunciation I'm sure it won't matter much, especially if it's only for an audition.

Fet'kah

can't think of what it rhymes with.
"Fe" is like in Santa Fe
t' is like t in tea (don't try to make it dound like a "d")
kah is like something in between of the first two sounds in "car" and "can" less deep than "car" less open than "can"
this is the closest I can think of.

Fyedka is a modification of original nickname Fyedya. So you have Fyodor as a full name, Fyedya as a nickname and Fyedka as a deminitive. Just like Michael - Mike - Mikey.

As near as I have been able to find anywhere it's pronounced like it's spelled. The closest name I could find was Fyedya and that is pronounced "Fie-dya" so I would assume (I know the adage for assuming) that it is pronounced "Fie-dka"

I remember it as:
Fee ED Kuh

seems as though it would be:

fee-ED-kuh

(and the first syllable should be as short as possible, almost as though the name were two, rather than three, syllables).
