I have a Compaq Presario (about four years old) and when I push the power button on the light shows up but goes off right away. It doesn't really start up or make any noices and usually takes a few tries to get it to stay on. Does anyone know why this is? Thanks.

The modem is fine, as is the monitor and speakers. Holding it down does not help. I thought it was the power supply, but I mean, it does turn on for a second.

Well this is most likely the Power Supply. If its dead or almost dead, the computer won't come on, or won't stay on. But, if you have a fried motherboard, it won't work either. I would suggest getting a new Power Supply first, but make sure its compatible with everything. If you get a powerful one it probably won't work. I have a computer thats 4 years old, and I got a 500 watt one that didn't have a special fan wire that my motherboard needed, so I put it on another computer. But if its the motherboard, and you want to keep everything you have now, you'll have to get one similar to yours. You probably have something like a socket 478, 2.8ghz or something. But check it out first if its not the power supply. Or send the model number of it, or a stats page, and I can help out.

Note: Take off the side of the case and keep it plugged in, but not on. Check for a light on the motherboard.

When you turn on the power button, hold it down for several seconds. Also, I don't know your system, but do you have a modem. What green lights are showing? Could you have a faulty connection due to the modem. Recheck all connections, deactivate it for at least 15 minutes, and then try a restart. Call Compaq, you may need a total recovery.

Sounds like your power supply might be failing
