i have a 200 gb hdd....making it about 203gb total, but its only show 189gb, i kno that its is always smaller but this 1 has some thing that says it will always show no less than 197gb when formated and windows xp installed, i dont even use it as a primary hdd its my backup drive.

Hard disk capacities are sold in decimal GB, but all OS's and programs deal with binary GB.

203 "gigabytes" x 1000 x 1000 x 1000 / 1024 / 1024 / 1024 = 189GB

They really shouldn't be allowed to fool the customer that way, but all HD manufactures do it.

My 200 GB hard drive is 189 also. Its just they way they do it. its a ripoff, but theres nothing you can do about it. I was mad when I learned that the first time. So basically if you want 200gb drive, you need to get a 250gb.

Actually.......a 200gb drive really means ~195 gb usable space after partitioning and formatting. If you already have files on it, then yes, some space would be taken up.

its the way they view space compared to the way windows veiws space
plus windows takes up some room
