My daughter's homework assignment is to put her spelling words in alphabetical order, so which of the following comes first?

boy's or boys'

boy's
...because punctuation marks always come before letters.

This should help you understand.

The boy's sister the store.
Since there is one boy, it comes before boys'.

The boy's sisters went to the store.
There are more than one boy, so it goes after.

The real reason is because the punctuation mark comes before the other letters.

if you type the two into excel and click sort alphabetical it puts boys' before boy's so I would go with boys' first

Boy's because it's singular.
