Wash it thoroughly with running water first and make sure there are no foreign bodies in the wound. Then just approximate the edges manually with your other hand. Keep the edges approximated till the cut is closed (it may take a while; I remember one deep cut in my left hand took me over 30 minutes till the wound got sealed). After that make sure to avoid stretching the wound excessively the first couple of days and keep it dry. If you are other wise healthy you don't need to put any antibiotic cream on (there is no statistically significant proof in the literature that they decrease the rate of infections). Infection is always a possibility (rare though especially with clean cut wounds which were not contaminated); if that occurs then local antibiotics do nothing (you will have to get oral antibiotics); by the way, if there are signs of infection then you should NOT get stitches !!! You NEVER close an infected wound!!! The way I described above is appropriate only for clean wounds with straight edges which can be approximated and for individuals who are healthy without any underlying conditions that could compromise wound healing (such as diabetes, immunodeficiencies, old age, etc.).....

It depends on how deep the cut is. If it's not very deep, then you can usually get away with a band-aid and some neosporin. You just have to make sure that it doesn't get infected. If after a week or so it doesn't seem to be healing or gets infected, then it is a good idea to go to the ER and get some stiches. Other then that, I think you'll be fine. I hit my head on the sidewalk once and I got a bad cut on it, I should have gotten stiches, but I didn't and it healed just fine = ).

if the cut is layed open (think butterfly sliced meat) you can put super glue inside of the cut and squeeze it shut, liquid stitches/ bandage is the same thing... nothing replaces the care of a dr. though :)
