Lille is pleasant year-round, with relatively mild winters. Fall ushers in the famed opera season—also a good time of year to indulge in Lille’s cold-weather comfort food. INSIDER TIP Visit the Wazemmes market on the Place de la Nouvelle Aventure for fresh organic produce, flea-market finds, and the occasional bona fide antique.

The weather is probably the best in Spring and early Summer. In August and even Sept., it can be very hot and many places are not air conditioned. If you are from the US, you will also be shocked to find that none of the windows have screens so the mosquitoes will eat you alive. LaBraderie IMHO is a big tourist trap. The concept sounds nice-- a flea market; but you end up finding a lot of junk (high priced junk). Old shoes (not antique or vintage, just ppl's old shoes), beat up furniture (no, not Louis XIV; just old 1980s furniture), etc. Be very careful with electronics-- tvs, radios, etc. More than a few ppl have been stuck with broken appliances. Still, you can have a nice time walking around the city-- the downtown area and the shops there; seeing movies, the fine arts museum (Musee des beaux arts), etc. OK, it's not the biggest city in the world, but it's nice in that you are visiting an "average" French city. Don't forget to try the local pastries-- heavy Flemish influence thus lots of delicious custard. A great variety is a pink colored pastry (looks like a rose). The "petals" are really sweet and the pastry is filled with custard. On rue Leon Gambetta, the eats are somewhat cheaper (but still great tasting) than downtown.
