Laurie R. King's novels about Kate Martinelli are set in San Francisco. The first two novels in the series are very good, but then the stories become self-indulgent.

Armisted Maupin's "Tales of the City" is set in San Francisco when it was the hippie capitol of America, though I warn you it's not family reading.

The poems of Lawrence Ferlinghetti use a lot of San Francisco themes. I know that's not a novel, but I figured it was info you could probably use.

Also try "Caroline's Daughers" by Alice Adams. I haven't read this book myself, but a friend of mine highly recommends it, and it's set in San Francisco.

James Patterson's mystery series that starts with 1st to Die is set in SF. It features four women who work together to solve crimes. One is a cop, one a lawyer, and I forget the other two, but they are entertaining.

I also think Laurie King has a series set there. Not the Mary Russell books or Folly, but the other ones. Blanking on the titles, sorry. And John Lescroart, too.
