One of the main characters was a monk or some sort of holy man or guru. He often said "The continuity of time is an illusion". He was instructing a younger man. I can't remember the author either (I read so much science fiction during that era.) but thought someone might remember the quote.

author seems to be Richard BAker (not Steven Hawking)

and I think it's not science fiction, but more like "speculative science"
