Everybody says that I look gothic, I wear a lot of black and shop at hot topic. I also love hard screamo and metal. But I also am girly and popular. ALL of my friends are gothic, am I?

I think that "gothic" just describes the way people dress and what music they listen to. when i was in high school, back in the 80's...I was gothic. but I was not all stupid and depressed all the time, because i had people who cared about me and i realized that. once you become an adult you will see that all the people who care about clothes and music are just dumb and you will understand that you are who you are and there's no stopping that...unless you are being stupid too, then you need to change. just tell them all to shut up. you can be whoever you want tobe.

Let's go through the checklist, shall we?

Lots of black: yes
Hot Topic shopper: yes
Metal music listener: yes
Girly: yes

You are a(n): Girly goth. You shop at Hot Topic and listen to metal music. Black loves you and you love black.

Hmm....I answered this question to ask why my generation insists on continually labeling themselves with a contrived sticker made by the invisible marketeers that they "hate". But then agfain, I'm an individual and so are my individual friends and we all listen to artists who are individuals and we drink individual soda. Good luck with life.

That's called a label, if you want to be labeled then go ahead and be "gothic". I've been labeled as such because I prefer to dress in black and listen to HIM and Marilyn Manson and I also shop at Hot Topic, but I'm far from "goth". People cannot tell you who or what you are, you decide that for yourself. I don't mind being called goth, emo, satanist, devil worshiper... I define me. Decide for yourself. Do you want to be goth? If so, then blessed be.

By high school standards, probably yes. By adult standards, definitely not. And not just because teens are automatically excluded from being real goths (although they pretty much are). You are not what you wear, who you hang out with, or the music you listen to. Being goth is a mindset, not a fashion, at least as far as adult goths are concerned. You seem to be a genuine individual, so just stick with that.
