I have gotten really into Sufjan Stevens, the Decemberists, Neutral Milk Hotel, Iron & Wine, and Bright Eyes. I think I have a pretty decent amount of arists in my music arsenal, but I would love to maybe be introduced to an artist similar to these previously named.

For starters you might try some of the below as they're all of the same vein as those you've listed

Guster
Elliot Smith
Ray Lamontagne
Ben Harper
Nickel Creek
Rilo Kiley
Mountain Goats
Brendan Benson

These are all artists of the highest caliber and come from different genres yet retain a similar feel to their sound. Modern Folk, Bluegrass, Indie Rock, heck these all cross genres like you and I cross streets. Also you might want to take a listen to my Launch Cast Radio station as well as I've compiled over 30,000 ratings for songs/artists/albums and it has serious depth. As I find genres to be suffocating and self defeating you should be pleasantly surprised by what you find there, a virtual cornucopia of music that is off the beaten path. A bit of that and you'll have enough artists to fill your every waking minute for the foreseeable future. Yes, I do take my music seriously and was once searching just like yourself and this is the result. Listen and enjoy! http://us.rd.yahoo.com/launch/integration/360/nav/lc/evt=32928/*http://music.yahoo.com/launchcast/station.asp?u=1573193970

New Amsterdams - First album was kinda punkish with a lot of emo sounding lyrics (heavily recommended) called "Never You Mind"

The next album is called "Para Toda Vida". It's all acoustic songs and shows some country influence but still has some personal lyrics. (best album in my opinion)

The third album is called "Worse for the Wear" and the country influence really comes to the fore, has some of the most filled out and fully realized songs on it.

4th is called "Story like a Scar" and again its alt-country, but with some real beautiful songs (and great use of a steel guitar)

There's also an online (soon to be released on cd) called
Killed or Cured" The lead singer was slowly coming to the realization that his other band (The Get Up Kids, greatest band ever, if you ask me) was breaking apart when he wrote this album and the songs really reflect this dawning realization. It's dark and harsh, but still good.

Then he's got a kids cd called "If you ever see an owl..." by his alter ego The Terrible Twos. I haven't heard it but the songs are supposedly fun and kid-like but still enjoyable if you're open to little kid stuff.

That's my recommendation, take it or leave it.

Ever tried Modest Mouse? They're the only Indie rock band I've ever cared for. Isaac Brock is a brilliant lyricist, and a very inventive (if technically insufficient) guitarist. Plus, they now have Johnny Marr (ex-guitarist for the Smiths) in their lineup.
