You sound like you have the same thing as me and many others, sleep paralysis. Have a look at these. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sleep_paralysis http://sleepdisorders.about.com/od/sleepparalysi1/ http://www.sleepeval.com/sleep_paralysis.htm
Knowing all about it won't make it go away but it will be less scary.

Yes..i have! My intial thoughts were, 'i'm possessed', but not being a believer in ghost and spirits i have yet to find an plausible explanation. My first encounter when i was in a my student 'digs'. It all started when the cleaning staff popped me the question, 'is everything ok?' when i was boarding at Uni. At that time i never thought what the questions was aimed at. Of course i was ok, just needed a bit of time setlling in. But in the weeks and months to come, i began to experience what you have written. Sometimes during the night and even in the day, when i was having a quick nap. It wasn't until the 1st term was over that i found out that my bedroom was a medical room, and allegedly some person had died in it, or so they say. As a non believer, i swapped my room with some friends, to gauge if it was just me being paranoid or something. I find it very hard to believe when my friends had the same experience (NOT encounter) and duly gave me my room back. To cut a long story short i changed the bed layout, thinking it might be some magnetic field interfereing with my head, but to no avail. But since leaving that room, i have never had this experience again.
I'm sure there's an good explaination out there but i'm NOT ruling it out that there are NO GHOSTS.

Hi - yes I have experienced this phenomena many times - its called night paralysis and there are a whole host of explanations. I wake up absolutely terrified and fighting for my life - it can be very distressing and the fear continues beyond the paralysis. I have recently had some cellular healing and the strength of the paralysis reduced dramatically so that I was aware of it but could fight it. If you search under cellular healing you should find a web site in the USA - I am sure you would be able to locate someone in the UK. You might not like the explanations they give you, but it fits if you get what I mean and it seems to be working for me.

The others have already answered it sufficiently. But yeah, I think it sucks when that happens. It scares me and is uncomfortable and feels helpless. Sometimes I get that and want to move my body to a more comfortable position but can't. Once I felt like I was crying out at my roommate asking for something, but later that day I asked him if I said anything while I was sleeping, and he said no. lol.

I have never talked openly about this before because I didn't know it happened to anyone else and I didn't want to seem weird but yes it happened to me once over 20 years ago, it was very much as you describe except I felt I was surrounded by darkness, I did talk to my clergyman and he said I must be an specially good person and that it was an evil being fighting for my soul and that if it ever happened again I was to pray fervently to God for deliverance.I'm glad to say there has been no repeat experiences but yes it was so scary that I have never forgotten. I should say that at the time this happened I wasn't making very good decisions in relation to men.

Yeah I used to get it in my teens. It felt like someone was sitting on my chest holding me down. I would panic and try to struggle but couldn't wake up, move a muscle or even open my eyes. It really freaked me out and I swear that once I felt hot breath on my face. All of a sudden it just stopped (thank god). I never found out what it was and I was gonna look at the link someone else gave above but I'm scared incase too much thought into it brings it back. Have to admit though, it feels good to know I'm not the only one who had this!!

ok this has happened to me before too, but for me it was way freakier , it felt as if my body was being jerked around, my eyes were open and i was conscious , but i could not talk scream , or control my body , it def does feel like a real energy battle and i must say as far as "sleep paralysys" i think this goes way deeper. You could feel a vibe in the room when thats happening as if your soul is fighting. I agree with one of your answers that if could be a spiritual fight. ITS VERY SCARY !!

Yes I used have this problem about thirty years ago there is a name for it but I have forgotten what it is as its been so long ago. I was told by a nursing sister at hospital that is common amongst nurses who work night shift. Maybe you could enquire about this horrible condition with nurses at the hospital. I can only tell you of my experience and that it does go away. Good luck and bye for now.

Omg yes indeed. I really hate that. It's called sleep paralysis. Your mind starts to wake up but your body hasn't! It is often referred to as Old Hag, 'cos some people feel a weight on their chest and they can't move to get it off (as if an old hag is sitting on you!)

Now, I have practised shaking myself out of it, but I hate it!

I did notice though, that if I was too warm it seemed to happen more...so now I just sleep with a light quilt. I think I used to get too hot and that would half wake me!

Apparently it can't harm you...just sh*ts the life out of you!!
