If you are an English knitter (yarn in right hand) here are the instructions:

Pull the yarn to the front. Insert the right needle into the front (so the right needle tip will be closer to you than the left) of the loop on the left needle from the right side to left. Wrap the yarn around the needle in a counter-clockwise fashion. Pull the right needle (along with the yarn you wrapped around it) back through the loop, and pull the old loop off the left needle.

It's hard for me to understand and follow written instructions, so as a previous poster said, you can also go to http://knittinghelp.com to see a video of the purl stitch (in English as well as Continental styles) and many other knitting techniques (including casting on and binding off).

It is a backward knit stitch. Pull the yarn to the front of the needle. Insert the other needle from the top down into the stitch on the needle. Check online for a picture. That would be most helpful. Sort of hard to describe. Feels awkward at first, but you will get it. Good luck!
