I had a sonogram test yesterday being 11 weeks and 6 days along. The doctor said she was pretty sure (80%) that the baby was a girl. It seems to me that it is a bit early to tell although it was a high-quality equipment. How accurate might be this prediction? Did any of you had an accurate result that early?

P.S I really wanted the first one to be a boy....

The baby's genitals are not clear on sonogram until about 18 weeks and sometimes not even then. So I would not listen to your doctor, and I don't know what kind of doctor would tell you that, that early. Something's not right, no matter how good the equipment is.

I had a sonogram at 12 weeks at well they predicted I'm having a boy and i want a girl :) At that point they really cant say with certainty. I would definitely not trust the 80% figure. At 20 weeks when the baby is more developed they can tell 100%. I had this same question after my sonogram did some research on it and learned that you can only tell the sex at 12 weeks if you have a miscarriage and the fetus is outside of the mother. The earliest most doctors even try to make a prediction is 16 weeks when the baby is more developed. Best wishes!

She wouldnt be able to tell yet. I had a miscarriage at 12 weeks and they coudnt tell the sex over the sonogram. And Never ever believe a dr if they say its a girl unless you have had the fuild test. When my son I had my first ultrasound at 18 weeks pregnant and you could see his boy parts.. The tech told me if he didnt have boy parts she wouldnt have said ti was a girl because you cant be 100% sure with an ultrasound. Plus I had a friend who recently had a baby and she had an US at 20 weeks pregnant and they told her the baby was a girl so she got everything in pink than the baby popped out and it was a boy.

I didnt think they could tell that early unless they thought it was a boy. There was always going to be a 50/50 chance of a girl so i guess you should start getting used to the idea. I went for my 18 week ultrasound and found i was having a boy (which i really wanted) but i am sure i would have gotten used the idea of a girl too - we really shouldnt go into these things wanting one or the other but its hard not to. You will love her and forget you ever thought that you wanted a boy when you see her for the first time.

I've never heard of anyone being able to tell that early from a sonogram (granted I'm not a sonogram technician so I don't have any direct experience). I'd say the prediction is going to be about 80% (just like doc said) accurate at this point.

I was 13 weeks when I was told I am having a boy!! Well actually 12 weeks 5 days! It can be told that early if the baby happend to be in a good position. I wouldn't run out and buy pink though, wait until at least 16 weeks or your next ultrasound to be sure its a girl. Congrats!!

I would probably guess about 65% that it i a girl.It could still be a boy. Hell I was 23 weeks at my last sonogram and they were still a little unsure they said that they were 95% sure it was a girl, but I think that might have been just because she was moving alot.

Most sonograms are accurate on the sex of the baby, and if your doctor is saying its a girl dont get to depressed it really is a bit early to find out. Although my husband and I found out at 13 weeks that it was a girl. We waited and sure enough she came out a girl "DUH" lol. Just be patient, and when you go back for another have them check again.. Best of Luck

Early gender determination by ultrasound has come a LONG way. My twin boys were correctly identified as boys at 11w1d.

This is a quote from a MEDLINE study on early gender determination using ultrasound..

RESULTS: The accuracy of sex determination increased with gestation from 70.3% at 11 weeks, to 98.7% at 12 weeks and 100% at 13 weeks.

Of course this assumes you have a tech who knows what he or she is doing!!!

Good luck!
