Between the steering wheel and the steering gearbox, there is more or less of a bend. Usually it is just a couple of inches above the box. There needs to be some kind of a connection there to accomodate the slight bend.

sometimes called the rag joint, it's where the steering column is hooked to the steering box or steering rack.

Its basically as has been stated above.. Its usually a small universal joint very much like the ones on a driveshaft (and for the same reasons)

its what joins the steering column anywhere is bends.
