Roots were the first thing that crossed my mind when I read your question. You could rent a power snake and clean the lines yourself. I don't know if you know what a powersnake is so I will just blab for awhile. A powersnake is like a manual snake but its usually electrically powered. The snake is VERY long (the roots could be 80' down the line). The snake will be activated usually by a pedal. Feed a few feet of line and press the pedal. Repeat until you hit the obstruction. There should be a cap or something in your basement which will allow you access to the line. If you are nervous about doing this, contact a plumber. They will usually charge the machine rental and the time it takes to do it. It should be under $100 for sure. If you find out that roots is the issue, after you get it cleared, there is a product called Root Out. You can likely find it at your local hardware store. It's a granulated crystal type stuff that you flush down the toilet now and then. It will prevent the roots from coming back.

Good luck!

When you ran the snake and it wouldnt go any farther, that is where your problem is. It may or may not be roots. Your pipe could have collapsed. There are different heads for cutting roots for the snake. if they dont work you may want to call in a pro. They will have cameras and more powerful equipment. They also have locators that once a special typr snake is in the drain they can locate exactly where you have a problem from up top.

If all the drains are backing up, you need to have the main line from the house to the city sewer connection cleaned out. It could be roots. Depending on local prices, it should run $150 to $300.
