I am a young american lady who has loved soccer since I was a child and we are talking about watching Pele, George Best, Rodney Marsh, Beckenbauer and many others.
I find it quite irresponsible how so many people on the football (soccer) sites like to criticize not only the Americans, but all countries as well.
First of all, the comment about Americans should learn their own history. Do you know what an American really is? Or have you been told by the media (press) or your government? Or are you just assuming what we are like in a general manner.
Yes, I think it is all of the above for every human being on this planet. When a person doesn't understand something or is unfamiliar with another person, it is a common human emotion to make judgements about others.
Second, America is a beautiful concept with positives and negatives just like any country on the planet.
THE MAJORITY OF AMERICANS DO NOT BELIEVE THEY ARE BETTER THAN THE REST OF THE WORLD !!!!!!!!!
WE ARE HUMAN BEINGS JUST LIKE EVERYONE ELSE !!!!!!!
THERE ARE MILLIONS OF AMERICANS WHO SACRIFICE EVERYDAY (not everyone here has money, the majority of the citizens scrape by everyday to get by. There are homeless men, women, and children sleeping on the streets or going without food), BUT THE GOVERNMENT ALWAYS MAKES SURE TO SEND MONEY, FOOD, PEOPLE, ETC. TO HELP COUNTRIES AFTER A DISASTER OR WHO ARE IN NEED.
We want to be involved and help others around the world, we also need to help our own citizens too.
And even though it is the most wonderful thing to vote for our leaders, once they are in office it is basically out of our hands.
It is probably the same in all of your countries too, if you have that freedom.
American people come from all walks of life, and from every place in the world, this is what makes it so beautiful (just like football).
ARGENTINA- I have a good friend from Argentina who was an international footballer, who is also best friends with Diego Maradona. He has played football (soccer) in this country in different leagues including the MLS. Like he says during the first three years of MLS there were fantastic players from all over the world like; Carlos Valderrama, Hugo Sanchez, Doctor Khulamo, Walter Zenga, etc.
Nobody forced these players to come here and play. MLS had gotten away from that style of player and hopefully now they are going back to that.
As far as Americans not giving a crap about soccer this is not true, because there are millions and millions of us who love it. Many of us not only follow World Cup play, but also European Premier Leagues (especially English and Italy), other world league's and some do enjoy MLS.
Let's not forget though that it is a large population as compared to maybe one European country, but not as large as say India etc.
There are so many sports here to choose from on a large level, that football (soccer) can get lost in the shuffel.
American soccer does not consider itself a big deal, but a growing sport that began in America in the late 1800's, and joined FIFA in 1914 (I believe that date is correct).
We do the best we can and we are trying. So maybe many of you think we are bragging about soccer. You are seriously mistaking.
You should look at it as trying our hardest and that things take time, and most importantly that we are trying to have a 'POSITIVE' attitude about soccer and not trying to be overly confident.
ROME wasn't built in a day and neither will soccer in the U.S.
Maybe instead of everyone always being so negative about everything and everyone, you should try to think about what soccer is really about, especially the World Cup. Yes, it is to some just a sport or a game, but to many it is about the citizens of the world coming together for maybe a moment in time to achieve a dream.
Maybe instead of war, countries could play the 'beautiful game' which can also have it's problems of violence, etc.
Like the Beatles once said 'Come Together', or sorry I should assume most people don't like them because they are British, or maybe you are just sitting around laughing at this Yahoo? Answer --from some stupid American person !!!!!!!
Sorry to get so negative but I guess that's what most people on this planet respond to instead of trying to make a positive difference in their community, country, world, or humanity.
Well have a nice day and maybe I will see some positive remarks from fellow human beings or just the ususal crap of 'that stupid American chick sucks just like them trying to play soccer' !!!!!!!

Seriously, if you have nothing nice to say, then don't say anything at all.
We Americans haven't been afraid to admit that we're not as good as others when it comes to soccer. We know that, we're not afraid of that. But one thing we do know is that soccer is become bigger and bigger here in the States, and our teams are become better and better.
I'm not going to put down Argentina (or any other country), it has some amazing players playing for big teams. But, I think a little more respect should be shown to fellow supporters and fellow soccer nations/teams.

Hey Gio, the perception here in the US is we're not the best in soccer. Where'd you get your information from? We know we're not the best and MLS is boring. Mexico hasn't beat the US on US soil since 2000 getting outstcored 12-0 in that span. Plus US beat Mexico 2-0 in the final 16 in 2002. Wow US must be really lucky. Mexico is a very good team. You don't give US team much credit.
You have a lot of anger. Try some anger management classes.
Rusty Red - use proper grammer. It's "their" history. Not "there" history. Scotland nor all of GB didn't give us America. If it wasn't for the US, you'd be part of the German Empire since the 1940s. Calm down. We don't think we're the best at everything. We know we're not as good as others in soccer.

I think most Americans know that we lag behind in soccer. In the U.S., soccer is no where near as popular as American football, baseball, basketball or even hockey. As a result, the soccer talent pool in the U.S. is very shallow.
It sounds like there's some anti-American sentiment here. If it's the result of our foreign policy in the Middle East, then there's not much us common folk can do except vote in 2008. Hopefully, we will bridge this gap one day and call each other friends.

No one said that the US was a power house just yet...but beating Mexico eight out of the last 10 times is far from lucky...I also doubt that the MLS is the worse league on earth...sounds like you have some personal issues to work out...Did you get turned down for college admission or a grenn card or something?

Not all of us do think we're "so good at soccer"; in fact, comparatively few of us even give a **** about soccer. We have our own sports here that most of us are more into.

their r quite a few good players from the US playin in the EPL. For example Mcbride is playin better than he ever has and is one of the top strikers in the league statistically. Also 3 of the top 6 goalies (2 in the top 3) in EPL fantasy points for goaltenders are American. (#2 Howard, #3 Friedel, #6 Hahnemann)

The same reason we think our basketball teams are the best............EGO EGO EGO !!!!
I'm an american kind of like our teams losing once in awhile, puts these, overpriced, highly glamorized, spoiled rich brats, down to earth a bit. I don't like the US losing, but these high priced athletic primar donnas need to lose. Deflates their heads a bit and bring them down to earth.
