A realist will say if there was once a full glass and now it has been halfed then a realist will say that realistically the glass is half full. Likewise to a pessimist. So what's the difference?

A realist is a person who sees more than the bad bits and more than the good bits, they are not an optimist or a pessimist. The pessimist will only see the down side of a situation, the optimist the up side, but the realist sees both sides and all the shades of grey.

Realists will acknowledge the possibility of a positive outcome (or at least partly positive) when the facts indicate it. Pessimists will minimize or dismiss the prospect, even when it would be reasonable to think a positive outcome is possible.

To use the 'glass half full' model: A pessimist will conclude that the glass will soon be empty and never be refilled. The realist will at least check the fridge to see if there's more milk. An optimist will assume there's more milk without checking the fridge.

I've asked the same question! People call me pessimistic and low-confidence, but I just tell them that I'm a realist. I'm confident enough in myself, but I don't allow myself to be more in the mirror than I really am. The only person that convinces is me, not someone else. So, I never do that.

Realists and pessimists are the same, for we live in a world with very few positives.

I thought the pessimist would say half empty. Looking for gloom on the brightest day. Now, the difference between a cynic and a realist is much smaller.

A realist sees whats truely there in reality... A pessimist tends to look only at the negative parts of life...

Just the outlook on it.

A pessimist would see two half-empty glasses and feel unhappy about it.
A realist would see them as one whole glass-full and accept it.
An optimist with no glasses would hope that the pessimist or realist leave him just one half-full glass.

A realist knows that things can get better or be made to get better or they can get worse or be made to get worse. A realist is confident enough to acknowledge that things can improve without fearing that others will think he's stupid and naive.

A pessimist doesn't believe they can get better - ever. A pessimist doesn't have faith in himself to improve the situation either. A pessimist is sometimes "attached" to being a pessimist because he worries he doesn't show others how "smart" and "not naive" he is they'll they'll think he's stupid.

I'd answer this question but if I'm thinking like a pessimist, I probably won't get the big points so why bother, but being a realist I'll reply to get the 3 points. lololol

A pessimist expects the worst, but a realist still has hope.
