I've just heard a few news bits on the story but it kinda seems like it to me.
They are on his list of the Axis of Evil and
Last week there was the news about the progress on the North Korean situation
Maybe he and his people think they have some momentum to close the deal on the whole triad.
What a mess, remember the good old days when the biggest problem in America was a stain on Monica's dress and whether or not Bill was lying about if was his or not?

Hold on, there, cowboy: Iran is trying to pick a fight with the rest of the world (quick: name three countries that would be considered their allies?). If you call making an effort to not let them get away with it picking a fight then so be it.

Of course, the US government's credibility is so low that its hard not to read sinister motives into anything we do vis-a-vis Iran. This would be a great time for another country to pick up the issue of Iran and carry it for awhile. Russia? Nope, they're installing nukes in Iran. China? They depend on Iranian oil; they're not going to push so hard that that particular spigot gets shut off. France? Yeah, right. The UK? I don't think that country is of a mind to support Tony Blair in any more international adventures. Maybe Canada can step forward on this one. Afterall they don't need the oil.
