You can put cacti in regular potting soil... but you may want to add sand for extra drainage, since cactus plants naturally grow in sandy soil and require extra drainage to keep from becoming and staying too wet.. You can also find specially prepared soil with sand mixed in just for cactus plants. ( personally, I'd just use regular potting soil with a little sand mixed in for drainage) this works just as well and costs much less! Good luck..

The best soil mixture for cacti & succulents is 50% pebbles, 25% coarse sand and 25% potting soil. Place a piece of broken pottery over the hole in the pot, add the soil mixture then transplant your cactus. Do not water for at least a week. I water once a week thereafter.

I did and they did great. I think they did better in the regular potting soil than they did in the cactus soil.

You can but then you have to be more careful about how you water them. If you do make sure you do not plant them too deep and add a rock layer to keep the water from the body of the plant.
You could also just add some COARSE sand to the potting soil and that would help

no it would make it rot, cactus should be potted with a mix of half potting soil and half sand, only water when soil is dry down to 1" deep

i like potting soil better for many larger cacti, it seems like you never have to water them
