Punk rock is an genre and movement that emerged in the mid-1970s. Preceded by a variety of protopunk music of the 1960s and early 1970s, punk rock developed between 1974 and 1976 in the United States, the United Kingdom, and Australia, where groups such as the Ramones and Sex Pistols were recognized as the vanguard of a new musical movement.

Punk bands, eschewing the perceived excesses of mainstream 1970s rock, created short, fast, hard music, with stripped-down instrumentation and often political or nihilistic lyrics. The associated punk subculture expresses youthful rebellion, distinctive clothing styles, a variety of anti-authoritarian ideologies, and a DIY (do it yourself) attitude.

punk meaning the style of clothing or music, because punk is a style of music, panic! at the disco is more pop punk because it is very dancing and popy with punk added into it, if u want some more punk music listen to blink-182, that kind of thing..... the best way is to google it and u get info on what punk is exactly and where it originated from and how it started.

wow! you are obnoxious! yes, those are 3 of the most general 'punk' bands, but they are only the popular ones that annoying people listen to because they think, 'oh i can be punk too! i am sooo cool. i FEEL it....' well, you are not! i bet you're an obnoxious prep if you even need to ask this question. punk is a way of life, and it's not just about music... i wouldn't say i'm 'punk' or 'emo' or 'scene' but atleast i understand what they are! its not as black and white and simple as you think it is. here is a good site on punk ROCK: http://www.researchpubs.com/features/whatispunk.php

if you want to know about the FASHION part of it:http://www.fashion-era.com/punks_fashion_history1.htm that explains it better than i could.

but if you want to only be a 'punk prep' then just stop now. I'm so tired of annoying ppl who go around 'wow! mcr is, like, the best band EVER! i'm so freaking cool...' it's about being different, if you want to be punk go buy some converse....if you are embarassed to wear them, then go back to your prep friends.

Those bands you named are not punk. They're more pop rock. Punk is about being rebellious and going against the authority. It's not how you dress. When I think of punk I think of the Clash, Ramones, Sex Pistols etc.
