Just goes to show that there is an exception to every rule. That certainly doesn't man the rule should be ignored.

Two problems here. First of all, that's way too many fish for a 40 gallon tank. They may be only 1/2 right now, but they will all grow to be 5-6 inches each. Secondly, convicts require a lower ph than your other 2 cichlids. They are not really compatable.

How did you get the convict cichlid to live with guppies? Once I tried that and the guppies got eaten.

Check the Guiness Book of Records and get the editor to come over and verify what you describe. Soon, the convicts will be there alone, after having enjoyed a tasty dinner. Or you will soon wake up and realize that it was a strange dream.

just because it worked for you does not mean it will work for everyone. and it doesn't mean your situation will stay that way. one day you may wake up to no guppies and smug cichlids.
