Play it safe before jump starting. Make sure the "dead" car has the ignition switch shut off and all types of lights and switches in off position when possible. The red positive jump cable always is attached to the positive post or positive bolt on the battery (some of the newer vehicles have a positive jump location else ware in the engine compartment) and usually has a red type flap cover. The black negative jump cable is to be attached to a metal/steel part of the engine or an attaching bracket that holds the alternator, power steering, and or a/c compressor. The reason for doing this is, if a spark occurs at the connecting negative battery post, their is a possibility of a battery explosion from sulfuric battery acid fumes that may be hovering over the battery. I speak from experience as I had a battery blow up on the "dead" car as I connected the negative jump cable to the negative post, this happening just after I had connected the positive jump cable to the positive post . Let the booster car, after starting, run for one to five minutes to charge up the "dead" car's battery before starting the dead car.

you can connect it to the battery neg, the reason some don't is because once the other jumper cables are connected, you can cause a spark connecting the other cable to the other post. so for safety sake, some connect the positive cable 1st to the battery and connect the neg cable to any good clean metal spot on the engine, that's where the other end of the battery negative cable goes anyway, so essentially any metal part on the engine or the car itself is like one big negative battery post. you may still make a spark when connecting the neg jumper cable but the spark will be away from the battery. hydrogen gas emitting from the battery can cause an explosion if ignited by a spark. seen this happen once, the battery literally blew up, shooting battery acid everywhere. i didn't do it, sorry typing with one hand, the cat is in the other. most people connect both cables to the battery when jumping anyway, try not to create a spark when you do though, finally- only the last of the 4 jumper cable connections will cause a spark, you know, 4 connections, 2 on each car

Please try to grasp the principle. If you hook the red cable positive to positive battery terminals. then hook the black one to a good clean metal part of the car. You can use the negative battery terminals, but it is best to make the last connection away from the battery, to some heavy metal piece. (Alternator bracket? or if there is a woven ground strap you can hook to that.) People say that if you hook to the battery for the last connection you might get a little spark. It is possible that this will start a fire, though in hundreds of times, I never have. If both cars have metal bumpers, you can cause them to touch, and then you won't need that ground (black) cable.

Bunch of tards answering lol. This won't work since this puts the second battery in parallel with the first instead of series like it's supposed to be. Jump start it off of a running car. Let it sit with the other car at about 2k rpm's for a minute or so and then try cranking it. If it doesn't work, wait again for a couple more minutes. The reason for raising the rpm's is that stock alternators in cars only charge above a set rpm.

The red goes on the positive battery terminal (the larger of the two, hopefully marked with a '+'). The black cable can go on the negative terminal, but be absolutely sure you haven't got them crossed. It can also be attached to any grounded item in the engine area: the frame, the engine mounts, even the accesory hangers (generator, alternator, powersteering unit). If you're not to a properly grounded bit, you won't have any effect (no additional power), so it's somewhat safer than going directly to the battery with both cables.
Once you have the cables attached to one battery, be sure not to allow the other ends to touch. Life may get exciting if you do.
Good luck.

put it on anywhere you see a piece of metal that isn't painted. but not near any belts or moving parts!! i like to use the alternator bracket or a bolt near the engine. in a dc system such as a car, the whole metal body of the car is the "-" or black wire. btw, the reason that you should NOT hook up the black to the battery post is that when you charge a lead acid battery hydrogen gas is formed which is very explosive (anyone heard of the hindenburg?!?!) and there is a good chance of making a spark while doing this, so DON'T hook it up to the post.

you may hook it to any exposed metal surface of the car, such as the hood, or the side of the engine compartment. I dont know what others have told you but there is no problem with hooking both positive and negative clips directly to the posts on the battery, just dont hook the positive on 1 car the the negative on the other car. just hook positive to positive and negative to negative and you'll be fine. Also dont touch the positive to any part of the car except the terminal or it will spark.

There are a few places to put it you can put it on the negative terminal on the battery, the black one, or any metal part of the engine. be careful not to touch the red and black cables together because they will spark.

put the red cable on the positive terminal and the black cable on the negative terminal on the dead battery marked with + positive and -- negative place the red jumper cable on positive terminal of jumper car and black cable on engine somewhere like a bolt or other metal to ground it.keep jumper cables away from moving parts like fan belts.
