i read about a lady that didnt want an epidural at first, then ended up getting one, but got paralyzed from it!?! How likely is this to happen if I get one?

The chances of this happening are very slim. The advances that have been made with catheters is just amazing. They are a lot more flexible than they used to be. They do not severe the spinal cord and will flex before impeding it. There are a lot of places that you can search for exact statistics, but the odds are higher that you will be in a plane crash or abducted by aliens.

I would look at the New England Journal of Medicine. Check out Mayo clinic's site. Even try www.webmd.com. You will see actual statistics and see how safe it really is.

I believe that epidural's are very safe, i have had 2. However when i was born my mom had a spinal and was temporarily paralyzed for about 2 weeks. Things are much different now and the technology has greatly improved.

Well I have never herd that before but from my experience of having 2 done and well I was pregnant I trust it they take that kinda of stuff seriously,I had to have some surgery done well preg and they gave me and full epidural and I hated it cuz i couldn't feel the baby kicking and moving the second time i had one I was going in labor but I was early by a month and he got his feet caught in my ribs and they gave me one that it hit a nerve so I can still feel him more but nothing else,if your still not sure about it ask your Doctor about getting something else there is always a plan B with them good luck

I would imagine millions of epidurals are done around the world daily, I had four in my life time because I had 4 c sections to deliver my babies, you just need to relax and follow the instructions of the Dr. I would imagine that if this were true it would be a very rare incidence and I would wonder if the woman panicked and contributed to it herself.

The chance is very small. When you are in the Hospital they will tell you all of the side effects. You may want to ask before you go into labor. I have not known anyone to have a problem.

I wouldnt worry about it. I had one after trying to do with out for 5 hours. I am glad I did it because I ended up being in labor for 19.5 hours. But since I have has my epi I have ALOT of back problems. My back hurts all the time.

I dont know the odds, but i do know that lady is almost definitely going to have a full recovery. she just got an overdose, but in time the drug wears off.

Not likely. My first Epi was 13 years ago, my second was just two months ago. Believe me, in just 13 years, they've improved a LOT!
