Ethel Merman never actually did Gypsy - either on film or as a stage show.
I think you are probably thinking of the 1962 version with Rosalind Russel as Rose (mama) and Natalie Wood as Louise (Gypsy Rose Lee)

If your looking for a version in the 1950's, there was something written for a musical called Gypsie: A Musical Fable, which was composed by Jules Styne and lyrics by Stephen Sondheim.
The Better know version, and the one that Robbie remixed was written by the British-Indian performer for Queen, Freddie Mercury. But this was in 1978.
