Brother has been very mean lately so I do not think he will help me. I need to jump car after I dig it and my neighbor's out of 3 inches of snow including trunk and hood so that will take awhile.

I do have directions in car for how to jump but an uncertain of one thing. Do not want to mess it up and harm neighbor's car as she is disabled and needs it.

One of the cables (forget if it is black or red as I don't have directions with me says not to put it on the battery post but on some metal somewhere by it.

Does anyone know where I am supposed to put this end and do I only put one color on correct post and the other on some other metal but not battery post on both of our cars or just mine. Please help as I feel desparate and upset...with noone top help me being alone and with no one to help but brother who lately won't help and is not home anyways.

1. Leave both engines OFF
The proper way to jump a car is in this order.
a) Place RED + on to GOOD Battery
b) Place RED + of the other end on to the BAD Battery.
c) Place BLACK - on to the GOOD Battery
d) Place Black - of the other end to part of the Chassis of the car with the bad battery. The metal should be exposed. Typically a nut from the shock tower is a good place.

Start up the car with the good battery and leave it running for a minute.

Try starting car with bad battery.

Remove the jumper cables in reverse order of installation.

DO NOT LET THE WIRES TOUCH!

Do not let the cars touch each other either!

The Chassis is a term for anywhere you can see EXPOSED metal (that is not painted over as paint will not conduct).
I prefer placing it on the nut of a shock tower. But any nut that does not have paint on it should do. You can also connect it to a point on the engine. Usually one of the hooks used to lower the engine into the bay is a good choice.

If you can't find a good point, you can connect it to the negative terminal of the dead battery. This is not preferred, but if you can't find a good spot, it is usable.

MAKE SURE YOU place the RED wires to Postive and Black to negative and DO NOT MIX THEM UP!

Start the neighbor's car and pull it into position. Raise the hood of both vehicles. Connect the red cable first to each of the positive + posts of the batteries. Connect the black negative - cable to the negative post of the neighbors battery, then connect the other end of the black negative- cable to your car (it is ok to put it on the post). You can put the black cable on a convenient spot on the car chassis (metal framework) or to a secondary negative cable connection point (if it exists). The negative side of the battery is tied to the car chassis so in theory, you should be able to "ground" the black negative cable anywhere on the framework, but you will have to make sure you get a good connection since steel components rust. I think that the battery posts (if they are accessible) are the best connection points to cut down on any resistance. Don't get your face over the battery and stand away as far as possible when connecting it. Allow the other car to charge the low battery for a few minutes before attempting to start your vehicle. Start your car but don't sit and grind on it if it fails to start in about 15 seconds. If you have a can of carburetor cleaner like Berryman's B-12 spray, you could spray some up into the air intake of your car to assure that it fires right away, but that may not be necessary. Good luck and try to stay warm.
