Actually you have things backward: The time periods were named after the states not the other way around. See the other answers for more information.

Madison: Your teacher is wrong as Neil H correctly points out. Won't be the first time and it won't be the last time you have a teacher tell you something is not correct.

Madison , give Flyboy a break . In geology it is usual to name a rock after the location where it is found. The Misissippian and Pennsylvanian geological time periods were named after the states where the rocks were found.

PENNSYLVANIAN PERIOD--The interval of geologic time from approximately 323 million to 290 million years ago. The period is named after the state of Pennsylvania in which rocks of this age are widespread and yield much coal.

MISSISSIPPIAN PERIOD--The interval of geologic time from 354 million to 323 million years ago and named after Mississippi.

North American geologists recognize both a Pennsylvanian period and a Mississippian period, whereas outside North America, geologists combine these two periods into one period called the Carboniferous.

The large reptiles living in the Carboniferous Period decided that it would be cool to name their period after a future state. Since they were able to see over 300 million years into the future they decided, but rival factions disagreed. The Abolitionists decided on Pennsylvania and the Revolutionists decided on Mississippi. Needless to say, Civil War erupted, terminating with the Permian Extinction and the onset of the dinosaurs in the Mesozoic Era. Moral: They who war, die by war.

I don't know how Mississippi got its name but Pennsylvania was named after William Penn, a historical figure of the time.
