In your opinion, what makes someone a conservative? Do you see conservativism as more related to party affiliation or more related to specific beliefs or specific stances on certain issues? If you say party affiliation, which one? If you say beliefs or stances, can you give examples?

I think real conservatives are the true patriots who know what our Founding Fathers made and want to go back to it. People who believe in living by the Constitution and the Bill of Rights as we were intended to. Unfortunately most of the people in the Republican party these days are Neo-cons and a whole lot closer to Fascists than true conservatives. Of course that doesn't make the Communists in the Democrat party any better either. People need to give up the false Left, Right paradigm and stop being good Republicans, stop being good Democrats, and Start being good Americans!

These words conservative and liberal paint people in a corner. I am a conservative, however there are times when I have a liberal view and there are times when I have a rebel view. I think the main conservative view is : I want the Government out of my pocket and out of my home. all other issues I can bend or reach middle ground. I believe in God - do all conservatives believe in God - NO - Do all liberals disbelieve in God -- NO - Conservative and liberal boils down to specific stances of specific issues. Do all liberals believe in abortion - NO Do all conservatives fight against abortion NO. I believe if someone could formulate a test or a standard by which each American could take as in a questionnaire to determine the core values of conservative v liberal we would all be surprised to find we had a lot in common

When I was in highschool (80's) I used to have a good connotation to that word because I thought of it simply as being the type of thought that encourages a system where if you work hard, you gain. If you're lazy, you don't.

I see things quite differently now. Basically conservative means someone who clings to a very structured way of life, someone who forever tries to control things and doesn't know how to treat their fellow human beings properly.

Now, with the way things are in the U.S., the word has become even more negative for me. It means to be blind. It means to think in terms of "us versus them", without even knowing who they are.

It means to hate reality, and to sometimes use religion to back one's opinions up.

Conservative means to cut funding to programs that help people. It means to widen the gap between rich and poor, and place the blame of being poor on the poor (who can't even think properly because they're hungry).

Conservativism means giving up common sense in favour of religious fervour and short-term economic gain.

Currently, politically, voting Republican would be conservative. That party can change, but currently they support Bush who is too blind to lead a country.

Conservative, in relation to the Republican party, USED to refer to fiscal and social conservatism. Fiscal conservatism (i.e. "small government" and reducing federal spending) has gone totally down the toilet under Bush's administration, which is upsetting to a lot of true fiscal conservatives. Bush's version of conservative is based entirely on social conservatism: anti-abortion, anti-gay marriage, anti-universal healthcare, anti-welfare, anti-sex education, anti-affirmative action, etc.

Conservative is anyone that refuses to change. Although, we all know change is inevitable, the fact that you are conservative makes you discard that fact.
