I find myself in a rut. I seem to think (or act) like it's ok or even expected to treat my girlfriend worse than I would treat a total stranger. Why is that?

I think there are several reasons. First, you feel comfortable with her and figure she will not dump you if you do not behave nicely all the time. Also, you probably no longer feel the need to impress her. And maybe she doesn't treat you as well. As I have gotten older, I have made an effort to treat my boyfriend like a king and I let him know how much I appreciate him. It's a good start that you are aware of your behavior. Now, just think of this every time you are about to take your girlfriend for granted and tell yourself how lucky you are and how you want to keep your relationship great.

People have a tendency to becomea little to comfortable when they have been in a relationship for some time. You probably treated her a lot better before you reached this comfort level. My guess is before you found out what you could get away with.

Because you don't respect her. Why would you do that? Why would you be more courteous to a stranger than to her? I know a few men like this and they can't keep a good woman for nothing..they have no clue how to treat them.

How did your father treat your mother? How would you like to be treated? How would you feel if something happened to her and you had to face the way you acted? Time to start changing your ways.

You're a fake. You haven't come to terms with who you are yet. You need to appear nicer/better than you really are.
If you clear out all the false beliefs that you're carrying around and become someone that you really like, you're going to treat them better than you do total strangers because you are going to like you. If you like yourself, it's easier to be caring to everyone.

Because as humans we like to be accepted by other people. With are significant others we are already accepted by them so we don't care as much compared to people we don't know.

Because their girlfriend lets them get away with it.. They will eventually meet a woman that will not take that from them.

Because you know she'll be there no matter what because she loves you. Maybe you take her for granted.
