In your scenario, if we are dealing with sadistic killers who toy with us for sport, why should I expect them to honor such an arrangement? When they ask for such a volunteer, are they not seeking the would-be heroes, so that they might kill them now, before they move to stop the robbery?
Good question though.... keep'em coming!

Faced with this I would have to think that the person that steps out to be killed would be a little on the stupid side. Because what would be to stop them from killing everyone else anyway. Not you because you would already be dead. If there are 5 of you then would it not be better if all 5 rush the robbers and only one or two would get shot and maybe not even killed in the wild gun fire as they ran to excape the stampede. Rushing them is called taking a chance where handing your self over would just simply mean death. However most people are too chicken to stand up and 5 would be killed anyway.
Watch out who you pull a gun on because one of them just might shove it up your rearend and fire.
So you would not be a hero by offering your life. You would be more of a fool. Fighting back till death would be a hero.
