Just wondering what's the most popular answer. My S-I-L thinks that the baby needs to stay in the protection of home until s/he is at least 8 weeks old (even when the weather is beautiful and 70 degrees). On the other hand, I look forward to stroller walks in shady parks or sitting outside my horse's pasture under a tree with my baby as soon as my body is up to it... as long as it isn't too hot, too cold or too buggy. Also, I will have to protect baby from the sun! What's your opinion???

I think that as long as the weather is good outside then you should take your kid out...it's good for them to get nice fresh air...i agree with you. *Smile*

She's bananas.
My son and I went to the drug store ( just for fun) when he was 10 DAYS (It was Halloween).
We've been on the go ever since.

My baby is a healthy happy four month old now and he loves going out and looking at people and trees and everything there is to see.

Having your baby live in a bubble for 8 weeks only makes them that much more suseptable to disease and ailment later on.

As long as they are well cared for and you are prepared for every contingency and dressed appropriately for the weather....go out and show off and have a great time!

I spent my entire maternity leave (all be it hobbling around because of a c-section) out and about with my baby boy and had the best time ever!

??? Eight weeks???
ROFL.
We took our daughter out to the grocery store the day we got home from the hospital. So she was 2 days old when she went out the first time.
We took her to an outdoor military air show when she was exactly 1 week old. We were out for about 2-3 hours. In July. I nursed her often, brought wipes to cool her down a bit, and made sure she wore light clothing that covered her body and a hat. She's been just about everywhere since then (she's now 7 1/2 months).

It's fine. It's good for them. Indoor locations (including your home) have a higher concentration of germs and pathogens than outside locations. Truthfully, she's probably safer outside than inside, if you're worried about germs. Take her where you want. As long as you're not taking her to the TB ward of your local hospital, she'll be fine.

I took my baby out after a few days (5-7). The outside world is a good place to take baby...don't worry so much. I worried alot with my first child but not so much with the second. There are germs in the hospital just the same...Baby and mom need to get out of the house - you will go crazy if you dont. Good luck and congrats.

Your sil is being over protective. 8 weeks is extreme. As long as you aren't taking the baby to a place with lots of people where the baby could come in contact with sick people then the child will be fine. A nice stroll, sitting outside is fine. Don't let your sil stress you out about this. I was taking my son out and about when he was less then a month old. He's about to be 12 years old. Healthy and strong.

Take your child out for walks as much as you want, as long as the baby is protected from sun and wind. I took my daughter out to a restaurant when she was 9 days old and she's now 5 and very happy and healthy. It will get your child used to being around other people plus you will get a chance to show off your cute baby to everyone.
I think your sis in law might have read too many baby books. You have to use them as guides and not as rule books. Congratulations on your new little one!

Babies actually need at least a little sunlight. My nephew was jaundiced as a newborn and was actually "prescribed" sunlight. It also helps regulate their internal clocks.
As for staying in with a baby for eight weeks,...that would be bad for the mom. I think it would drive almost anyone a little crazy.

Your SIL is on glue...its perfectly ok to take baby for a walk in the stroller. Go for a walk and some fresh air.

you SIL is nuts........your suposed to stay couped up in the house for 3 months? how about no. Babys are fine outside as long as they are dressed and covered appropriatly.
And yes you need to protect your baby from the sun just as you do yourself........the sun is not good for skin...hints skin cancer.
