It's a word that has been around a long time. Considered Vulgar because it describes the "act" in a crude and non caring way. The funny thing about that word is even when it's heard by someone who has used it before, it can make the person hearing it feel uncomfortable.

Because as it started out, it was not even a word, it was an acronym, used to describe a criminal offense. In those days, the conviction was "For Unlawful Carnal Knowledge," and abbreviated in records by the four letters we know it by. I don't know what the punishment was at that time... probably flogging or branding, or being driven out of the community. I don't think it was still punishable by death.

It is considered bad because of it's original incriminating and onerous meaning.

We have made it that way. The meanings of words change over time. For instance - "gay" used to mean "happy," but now it refers to a homosexual. Curse words come and go - and we have allowed this one a place in the Dirty Word Hall of Fame.
