My Dad swears up and down that when he was a kid chimney was spelled with a "b". So it would spell like "chimbney". Is there any truth to this? I think he is full of it!

I am surprised that nobody knew this but there use to be a company that cleans chimneys for a living in London, England. The company name was "Chimbney Sweepers" named after the late owner Charles Chimbney. A U.S. Company tried to capitalize on the name in the United States (since it was so popular in England) but failed miserably. The Chimbney name has been a legend for years but, the business shut down shortly after Charles passed in the mid 60's. There was a documentary on this that I saw back in the 80's but I haven't seen it since.

So, the answer to your question....Yes my Dear, there is a Chimbney.

Some people do mispronounce the word as "chimbley". He's either kidding, or else he really thinks that's the way to say it and spell it. Either way, he's wrong. Chimney has always been spelled as chimney.

I have just read Dennis's answer. If what he says is true (and maybe your Dad is from the London area) then that could account for your Dad's claim!

He might be right. I just did a Google search and came up with a Chimbney Bird that lives in chimney? Also a lot of Chimbney Sweeps popped up so there might be some truth to this spelling.

I think that your dad may have learned some odd way of spelling it but there has never been a way to spell chimney with a B in the English language.

Ever since I can remember it has been spelled chimney in America at least. And I am probably around your Dad's age or a little older.
