Sidney Crosby, is by far, the best player in the NHL. He is a team player, unlike some puck-hogs, he makes plays and sets up his teammates. He is more concerned with winning than he is his with how many goals he has. Gretzky even said that he could break his records some day. He lives with Mario Lemieux, one of the greatest players the game has ever saw. Had 102 points as a 18 year old rookie. Is and Alternate captain for the Penguins. He won the Mark Messier leadership award. He played in the All-Star game. I mean, honestly, people who say he's overrated are bias and don't know the facts. This kid is scary good.

Sidney Crosby. I could sympathize with people who equate goal-scoring with being the best but that misses the nuances of what makes a good hockey player. Crosby is the best playmaker in the game. If you asked last year who was better, Ovechkin or Crosby, the answer was clearly Ovechkin. This year, Crosby has elevated his game and the game of those around him. And to whomever says Crosby can't take a hit hasn't watched him play. Crosby may not be huge, but on skates, he can absorb a blow as well as anyone else.

Indeed Sidney Crosby.

Crosby is a very exciting player and the kind of player who can single-handedly turn a game around either by scoring or setting up his 'mates.

But BEST is a complex question. Obviously it is not simply the case that best = most goals (or most points). Or in the case of goalies best = lowest GAA or highest sv%. And I would argue best also is not the same as most important to his team. I think there would need to be some sort of equasion like:

assists
+ goals
+ (game tying goals x 2)
+ (overtime goals x 3)
+ # of dumb retaliatory penalties NOT taken
+ # of dumb penalties drawn
+ how good you play on a lousy team
+ how hard you play in both ends
+ how hard you hit
+ how hard you are to hit
+ (how much better you make everyone else on your team look and play when they are on the ice with you x 100).

Candidates?

Best Goalie: Martin Brodeur
Best D-Man: Nicklas Lidstrom
Best LW: Alexander Ovechkin
Best Centre: Vincent LeCavalier
Best RW: Jarome Iginla

IF the best player is determined by the winner of the Hart Trophy then I would definately say Marty Brodeur this year.

The Great One hands down gretzky will always be the best player and if anyone was to beat his records it would beat Crosby

Sidney Crosby's a pretty good player...
but my favorite that I think is the best is...
Marion Gaborik (he plays for the Minnesota Wild)
He is EXTREMELY fast, and a really awesome player! (he's also pretty cute!) haha

None of the answers above are unreasonable, but I would go with........

Martin Brodeur

He has almost single-handedly carried an otherwise very average Devil's team to one of the best records in the entire NHL.
