Girls focus on these things because they have learned that there is value in it. Somewhere they have been taught that these things: hair, clothing, & makeup are important. Where from? Family, society, media, peers, fashion/makeup marketing and many other places.
It is also a way to bond with their friends and understand their identity. It's hard to go around telling people who you are and what you are about. So they let people know something about themselves by just how they look. Their appearance is an indication that they take pride in their appearance and that these sorts of activities (grooming) are important to them & something that they value in others.
It's also, for the ones that go over board with their makeup, a way for you to not really notice who they are as a person. In hopes that you will focus on all of that exterior stuff and not get to know what's going on past that.
With all that being said there is also the fact that they enjoy it. They like how some added eye color really brings out their eyes or what have you. It helps them feel prettier. Pretty today seems paramount to everything else.

Not all high school girls are so self-conscious. The ones that are don't understand the importance of an awesome personality. They are always trying to get people to like them and make sure that they don't make enemies along the way. It's very difficult to be happy about yourself when you're always worried about what people think. As they get into their junior and senior years they begin to be their own individual and that self-consciousness starts to go away.

No matter if they don't care about what other people think of them, they still like to look good for THEMSELVES. It makes you feel confident and good when you go out, to look the way they do with their own style, make up, hair..etc. Personality is a huge part of it, but you show your personality with your hair, and your makeup, and your clothes. Everyone has different style.

Because they know that guys in high school are shallow and only look for looks. I only know of a few guys from my school that don't care about looks.
I know guys are shallow, but I don't care what I look like. Well, I do but not as much as a lot of the girls at my school.

this is how it is, its to become popular
if u look good and have a great personality- u r automatically popular
if u don't, but have a awesome personality- u have to WORK HARD to become popular
if u look good, but have a baddish personality- u r STILL popular
if you don't look good AND have a baddish personality- umm, sorry, ur not that popular
ANYWAY- non-popular girls have more fun in high school

girls worry about that because they are trying to look cute of a boy or something like that because if i was worry about that is when i'm trying to look good for a boy.

what else are they suppose to worry about? its the one thing they can control, its either that or an eating disorder and no one wants an eating disorder.

girls worry about their apperance even in elemntary school. if they look good then they feel better about themselves.
