From one old guy to another If I'm not mistaken that PC didn't come with a CD. It is on your hard drive so now let's fix it. When you first turn it on tap f10 on your keyboard this should take you to the recovery console with your up and down arrow keys select repair then follow instructions that should get you up and running.
You can do a on-line virus scan at these links after you get it going. hope this helps

What you need to do is call up Compaq/hp to order a set of Cd's restore CD it well cost $10:63 comes on 3 Cd's. they would need the S/N number and the model number of your computer. tell them what version of windows xp you have and if you have sp1 or sp2 install when the computer was new on those cd's it well have your windows xp plus all drivers and software that came with that computer system I had that happen to me to I got a virus.

if you can uninstall windows xp, run your virus program, clean your disc, and reinstall you xp. If that doesn't help, uninstall it, and take it to be checked.

Sometimes xp is not original and this can happen. Oh i see you don't have the disc, try to run your virus programs, to clean your disc, if not it could be a corrupted copy of xp, you will need to have it checked.
Can you remember what you were doing before this happened?

if you can go to the top of the pc check the history, perhaps you can find where it went wrong.
you can also try restore system, and it will restore it to a previous date, before the problem started.

I hope that this of some help.

Sounds like your hard drive is fried. Time to replace it. Hope you had your data backed up.
