It goes answer American Ideas of democracy because school uniforms to us smack of facism even if most American's wouldn't verbalize it in that manner.
Good Luck!!!

RE:
Why don't American school students wear uniforms?
I am from Sydney, Australia, and we love watching American sitcoms. I notice that American Students are always looking so hip in their own attire, how is it that you guys never wear school uniforms? Students in Australia must wear school uniforms right up until the end of highschool.

Some American Schools require students to wear uniforms, but the majority do not. As for television the more popular thing is individuality..so most shows will not depict uniforms. Most Private Schools in America (if not all) require uniforms.

Some schools do and its because of the whole anti-gang thing. And some don't until they see a problem with students dressing inappropriately. But I think most wear uniform to distingish students from outside people.

we feel that individuality is important. we express ourselves with wearing what we want. we cant wear any thing inappropriate. i sometimes wish we did have uniforms so that people who didn't have enough money to buy the newest trend wouldn't feel left out. some private schools do wear uniforms in the states. the reason we don't have uniforms yet is that most students oppose the thought of the same uniform on everyone.

Most don't but some do because parents with lots of money think it must be a better school if the kids are uniformed.

Well - we would stifle our childrens creativity if we did not allow them to dress as they please!! After all why would we want them to dress in uniforms. They might actually be valued for their minds as opposed to what brands of jeans, shoes, or t's we can buy them. How else are they going to show their individuality unless we allow them to dress in whatever they please.
I went to Catholic School I wore uniforms. My children went to private school. they wore uniforms. I'm not sure why others don't like it - I sure did. No fights over inappropriate t-shirts.

Because the premise of this country's origin is independence. People left the old world to be able to be themselves without being persecuted. Some private schools, prep schools and religious schools require uniforms and even some public schools. I support allowing kids to dress themselves and develop independence, which promote independent thinking and living
