The best place in California to go for beaches, shopping, and palm trees is San Diego. (Northern California is cooler and not nearly as good of a beach scene.)
San Diego has spectacular coastal scenery, many beaches to choose from, and great beach hotels. There are so many things to do in San Diego....such as watching the sun set slowly into the Pacific, beach bonfires, kayaking through caves, biking, hiking, beach volleyball, bay cruises, jet skiing, swimming under a waterfall, carriage rides, romantic gondola rides, and more.

I grew up in S. CA> I would avoid the Bay area is you're looking for warm beaches. San Diego area is by far the best for that. Go to Coronado (expensive, but nice). La Jolla is another great option - look on a map and go anywhere from San Diego up to Oceanside along 5. Carlsbad...La Jolla, Del Mar etc....

If you have some serious $ to spend check out the st. regis in Danna Point. your description leads me to think you might like south orange county. Newport beach and south. However, if you are going in the winter remember that Its is not prime beach season for us but you will probably find it warmer than wherever you are coming form. as for shopping in south OC try Fashion Island or South Coast Plaza. for the "mall" experience. For small shops and sea side restaurants try Laguna Beach
