THE MISSISSIPPI RIVER! Just draw a rough outline of the US and then add the river. If you google 'map of Mississippi river' you can kind of look at that as you do it. I find that despite the fact I am a terrible artist if I look at a picture and try to draw it I am better than if I try it off the top of my head. Maybe arrows showing their trip, did they start out in DC or did they officially start their trip on the river? Oh- and maybe a canoe, since that is how they traveled. They traveled down the river for the expedition making it a great symbol of the trip.

Draw a picture of some mountains (Rocky Mountains) with a river kind of wide in the foreground but getting narrower as it goes into the distance and finally between the mountains. Put a caption at the bottom saying "The Way West"
