I have been into the Chili's since i was 15 (years ago!) when they were really funky and original. Have they gone too mainstream now? I like the odd latest song but they all seem to sound the same. Do you agree or is it just me, old school?

It is a lot more pop than it used to be. They still have some good songs but they are all starting to sound the same now. I love their old stuff but I'm having trouble getting into the new album. I heard their latest on the radio recently and it sounded identical to one off By the Way (sorry, the name escapes me). I still like them and I will see them in concert when they come my way but I think they have lost a lot of their shine. Regardless, their music has provided a wonderful soundtrack to my life in the past so I will always be grateful for that =)

the chili peppers have been 'mainstream' for a decade. they were an awesome band before blood sugar sex magic and they are an awesome band now. flea is perhaps the most talented bassist in rock music. frusciante has taken the guitar somewhere else and his harmonies get better with each album. the whole band has grown throughout the years. abbey road sounds different than meet the beatles. the peppers may be mainstream, but they never sold out. they are making the music they want to make and it sounds great. i agree that their last two albums sound similar, but so do their first three. after twenty three years in the music industry, they are well beyond terms like mainstream.

No, the term "mainstream" is just another label people use when they want to seem like they know a lot about music, like "oh my stuff's so indie and original if it's mainstream and everyone likes it it must suck" but really it's just another way to limit yourself. If someone didn't like something just because it was mainstream, that's just as bad as liking something just because it's mainstream.
Now for my point: They are still incredibly original. Read through some lyrics off of Californication, By the Way and Stadium Arcadium. They may not be as raunchy, but they still have a lot of meaning and poetic nature to them. And Flea's bass still kicks a$s, if we're talking about funk here. Charlie is incredibly old school, and Tell me Baby is a good blend of old school and "mainstream". John's guitar is still awesome, that hasnt changed. And if you see them live they're still the same old goofballs they were before. Give them a break. Music changes over time. If they were the exact same now as they were before then they wouldn't have grown as musicians and it'd be boring.

Well, I have nothing against mainstream bands, i just can't believe that they beat U2 and Green Day with Dani California...I'm a fan of all three of them, but I really wanted "The Saints are Coming" to win because it was for a good cause and it was a good song :( but i really do think they are to mainstream...a band is definitely mainstream when I'VE heard of them :) except green day, I've been a fan of them for 12 years (since I was 14)

A lot of their newer stuff (probably over the past 7 years or so, seems to sound similar, but it still has their own distinct sound. I don't think anyone else sounds like them or really ever has, and they defintely don't sound like anybody else. I know what you mean about the style in recent years being different from their former style many years ago, but I don't think they've gone too mainstream or anything or sold out. I think they've just, as we all do, changed a bit over time. ;)

well I agree that they've gone too mainstream, everyone seems to listen to them now, I've been into them practically since I was born (or at least old enough to appreciate music) and it annoys the t*ts off me that everyone's suddenly jumping on the bandwagon. I mean, back when I was about 8 and my sister was 10 (8 years ago) she was always complaining about them, now she loves them! (of course she denies ever saying a word against them, but I've a better memory) their new stuff isn't as great as say, Californication (best album ever), but there are a few gems on there if you listen hard enough, 'Death Of A Martian' is bloody brilliant.

If a band achieve popularity it seems that they are seen to have "sold out". Surely a band set out to gain a wide audience. Unfortunately there seem to be a lot of people out there that only listen to what they see as something no one else wants to listen to to appear cool.
I saw the chilis live in Glasgow a few years back and it was the best live performance i've ever seen. Let's see if any of these "bands" that are starting out now are still around in 20 years. Can't see it myself.

Besides Dani California everything else I've heard off Stadium Arcadium sounds the same and is a bit dull. They can still produce the odd gem now and again so I'm not writing them off just yet.
