"The Princess Bride" rivals the book; they are both utterly fanastic and I can't say which is better.
"Lord of the Rings", obviously.
"Harry Potter"- one of my favorite series of movies-from-books, because the book is more detailed, in-depth, but both are great experiences.
"Under the Tuscan Sun", I think, is one of the those movies that was fantastic, but came from a book that wasn't that great at all.
"Children of Men", my newest favorite movie, was based off a book (that I never read).
Those are some off the top of my head.
Maybe this list can help you?

Hi Fidelity, it's a US movie based on an book written by an English writer, but it's a terrific movie. John Cusack, Joan Cusack, Jack Black are only 3 of a lot of superb actors in it.

A number of Philip K. Dick's stories have been made into great movies in the Sci-Fi genre:
- Blade Runner (based on 'Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep)
- Total Recall (based on 'We Can Remember it for You Wholesale')
- Minority Report
- and more recently, A Scanner Darkly

The Sweet Hereafter by Russell Banks - The movie really captured the bittersweetness of the book beautifully. This is a good story if you are into a different version of the Pied Piper tale.

One of my favourite movie is an old Warner Brothers film called 'The Iron Giant', if you've watched it, high five! If not, what are you waiting for! It's very heart warming, funny, adventurous and not not to mention it has a GIANT METAL ROBOT!! What more could you want?

Well,"The witches of Eastweeck", the novel is not much, the film is spectacular. "Titus" by Shakespeare, was filmed too, Jessica Lang&sir Anthony Hopkins made the screen burn with passion. "Young Lions" with Marlon Brando is ecranisation, then, uhh, (I`m trying to remember only the good ones)....... It`s hard, books are generally so much better......... "Le Chevalieu de Maison Rouge" by Dumas...."la reine Margot" isn`t bad either....... An old Russian version (black&white) of "War&Peace" is a master-piece, You can really feel every emotion, camera is exquisit, too... That`s about enough from my part...

That would depend on your definition of "great"... however, here are some movie/book combinations that I enjoyed.
"I, Robot" (Asimov) - the book is actually a collection of short stories, but the movie does use some of the themes in the stories.
"Twelfth Night" (Shakespeare) - even though it's a play, and not a novel.
"Lord of the Rings" (Tolkien)
"The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe" (Lewis)
the "Harry Potter" series (Rowling)
"The Bourne Identity" (Ludlum)
