While I have never been "knocked out", I have been forced to knock out two people whom were attacking me and have witnessed a third getting knocked out.

The individual who I witnessed getting knocked out and one of the individuals who I knocked out seemed to merely crumple to the ground like rag-dolls and regained consciousness after no less then ten minutes. The individual who I witnessed being knocked out had been attempting to hang my cat and was stopped when my brother hit him in the head with a ratchet, rendering him unconscious. The first of the individuals I knocked out, this individual didn't like the fact that I was dating his ex-girlfriend and attacked me with a piece of pipe forcing me to defend myself and to punch him in the head, knocking him out.

The second individual I was forced to knock out was drunk at the time and decided to expose himself and demand that my girlfriend "suck" him. When I intervened and pushed him away, he swung at me and, after blocking his blow struck him back. He staggered for several minutes and then fell to the floor, before regaining consciousness several seconds latter.

It would appear as though your experience was similar to the second individual who I was forced to knock out.

Either was, unconsciousness is caused by swelling in the brain that causes the brain to expand. When it can expand no more, it shuts down the frontal lob in order to avoid sustaining further damage and hence you fall into unconsciousness.

Hmmm...I don't know why you "black out" when getting hit on the head, but that's a good question.

I've never been KO but I did faint once. I was standing with a group of people talking, got dizzy for a few seconds, and dropped to the the floor. I woke up a second later. It was terrifying and only happened that one time. I never figured out why I fainted.

Usually it is an interruption in the supply of oxygen to the brain.

I was knocked out by a fall from a tree when I was 8.
