Those of us who know any history apart from Hitler know that Portugal is our oldest ally and we are grateful for that.

Well of course we're grateful for being allies, but then there was the whole Armada thing when you helped the Spanish...

They do teach the real history btw, just not all of it...there isn't time in the school day to cover everything that happened since the Romans in any depth...

When I was at school (8years ago) they were still teaching the real history of our country and they taught English. Has this changed?

History is determined by the "Winners". Who ever is in power determines which views are kept for posterity, this typically includes only the views that shed a favorable light on them.

the real history of any nation will be geared towards finding fault with others, and celebrating succes in its self. it is hardly suprising given what a national history is for that they are almost all rather insular in the way they assign praise. its not just us :0

Sweetheart? I think you have English envy. You have a romantic notion of Portugal, which is a nice country, but is considered by most the red headed stepchild of Spain.

I think slavery and colonialism made Britain rich not the Portuguese. Not that we should be proud of the fact.
