I need to find out the total amount in charges made by the Halifax Bank to my accounts. I know there is a £10 charge for such information and I think the address is in Leeds or maybe there is an email address.I want to ask them to refund the charges and I know I may have to go to the small claims court to do this but it's my money and I want it back!!!!!!!

Your request should be addressed to Head Office:
HBOS plc
Trinity Road
Halifax
HX1 2RG

The Halifax has a legal duty to provide the information to you within forty working days.

All the charges should have been detailed on your monthly Bank Statements (which is where you will find their address).

If you didn't keep your statements, you can ask them to create copies, however I believe they can charge £10 for EACH statement (i.e. for each month)...

If you have on-line banking you should be able to get all the transactions details on-line (no need to ask for duplicate statements).

I believe they are entitled to charge something like £5 for each time you go into overdraft - so if they charged £35 you can claim the £30 back ...

Add up what you think they owe you & write them a letter saying 'please refund excessive charges total £xxx within 14 days'.

If you don't hear within 14 days then you can go to court.

Good Luck !

You don't need to go to the small claims court - the financial ombudsman is the place to go.

Get the address from their web site or a local branch. Write expressing your case and say that you wish to go to the financial ombudsman if matters cannot be sorted out at bank level. Ask for a "non agreement" letter and they will send you details of how to move to the financial ombudsman. They are obliged to answer your letter within 7 working days.

Good luck.

today in the daily mail there was a great article on problems such as these...also have a look at moneysavingexpert.co.uk martyn lewis has been at the forefront of reclaiming bank charges etc and tells you how to do it...

as i understand the bank cannott make a profit from telling you / charging you for your overdraft and this applies to credit cards as well, if you miss a payment...the consumer protection council has said they may only charge 12 pounds to write to you etc...good luck

Go on to their website, there is a complaint section on there for you to use.
