it could take from a few years to a decade - it all depends on what you are studying and where you are studying.

Varies greatly from major to major. Also depends on whether you go full time or not. You can count on about three years if you are in a big hurry.

Your use of the term M.Phil. indicates that you are in the U.K. Conditions there are different from the U.S., but in general, the previous answerer is correct: It depends on the field. In the U.S., it took me 4.5 years to get a Ph.D. in chemistry.
