The Soviets had been trying to form an alliance with Britain and France since Hitler rose to power, but after Munich, Stalin was convinced that the West was too weak and frightened to be of any help. So rather than risk getting drawn into a war against Germany with no allies he decided to try and buy as much time as he could by dealing with Germany instead.

The Nazi-Soviet pact benefitted both nations . The Soviets had military difficulties due to the tremendous pressure brought on by Stalin's purges that it bought them time to what they believed would be an inevitable showdown with Germany or a complete truce. The Nazis on the other hand desired to have Poland not only because of their Lebenstraum or land possession program but for a desired seaport at Danzig because they were landlocked. Also with the Soviets out of the way the Nazis could aim their eyes to the west and an avoidance of a two front war.

The Non-Aggression Pact was a deal that was made between Germany and USSR. The Germans could pull troops from the soviet border and use them in the attack on France. The Soviets used it to try and build up its force after Stalin, meaning " Man of Steel" , destroyed his arm forces and scientists after his purges
